Why Motorcycle Insurance Companies Value Experienced Riders

2010-11-24

Motorcycle insurance companies calculate their premiums using a number of different factors. They review the type of motorcycle, including the make, model, and year of the bike; the annual distance traveled; territory of residence; and perhaps the most important factor, the driving record of the individual. This is why no two people will pay the same premiums for their motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance companies prefer to insure experienced riders for a number of reasons.

The more experience a person has driving, the lower their insurance premiums will be. A new driver has no experience dealing with the many potentially dangerous scenarios that face drivers every day on the road. This experience only comes with many years of driving. A person who has been riding motorcycles for 20 years will have the reflexes and mental responses required to avoid accidents. A newly licensed driver does not yet possess this experience and because of this fact, they are more likely to be in an accident and file a claim with their insurance company.

A person who has just gotten their motorcycle license is usually a younger person; although this is not always the case. Younger people, especially males, can be overly aggressive and more careless when it comes to driving. They tend to speed more as well which can lead to an accumulation of traffic tickets and accidents. Motorcycle insurance companies consider these drivers as high risk drivers. This means that they are more likely to file a claim through the insurance company than a person who has been riding for many years.

Motorcycle insurance not only covers damages and injuries caused by accidents, but depending on the coverage that you have purchased, it may cover damages to the motorcycle itself. Comprehensive insurance covers damages from perils such as fire, theft, and vandalism. More experienced riders have the foresight to know that they should store their motorcycle in a locked and secure area or at least on a well lit street. This lessens the chance of the motorcycle being stolen, vandalized, or being damaged in a hit and run accident. People who have never owned a motorcycle may never think of these scenarios and may be inviting thieves and vandals to wreck their precious motorcycle. This in turn leads to an insurance claim and a possible payout by the insurance company.

If you are planning on purchasing a motorcycle and are alarmed at the high premiums that are being charged by motorcycle insurance companies, you can rest assured that your premiums will gradually decrease over time as long as you gather more experience on the road and don't accumulate any tickets or suspensions, or are not involved in any accidents.
