Two Tests That Should Be Done Every Year To Ensure Proper Motorcycle Functioning And Keep Insurance Costs Low

2010-05-18

Congratulations! You have purchased your motorcycle and, of course, comprehensive motorcycle insurance at an affordable rate. Your motorcycle insurance policy is important to you; like any other vehicle, a motorcycle is legally required to have the proper amount of insurance. Now that you have both your bike and your insurance, you want to be able to keep your insurance rates and costs low. Luckily for you there are several maintenance tricks that you can use to keep your motorcycle running well and your insurance policy low.

In particular there are two tests you can have performed or perform at home that will ensure your motorcycle is in good condition. Your motorcycle's condition is one of the most important factors in keeping your insurance costs low.

First, your motorcycle's battery is one of the key parts of the motorcycle that you want to keep running smoothly. That way you can avoid problems on the road and problems with your insurance costs. There are several things you can do to help ensure that your motorcycle's battery is running smoothly including checking the electrolyte levels, topping off with distilled water (tap water has elements that are not good for your battery), and making sure the battery is clean. Most of all, you will want to check the actual voltage of the battery with a voltmeter or hydrometer. If a battery reads only 12 volts or less when it has been at rest (no charge going to it or away from it) is badly depleted.

Second, sprocket and chain maintenance are going to be an important part of your motorcycle safety test routine. You can do some of this maintenance at home or you can also take your motorcycle into a repair shop or dealership in order to get professional testing. Sprocket renewal is one of the major pieces keeping your sprockets and chains in good working order. Also, make sure that your chain is in good condition; if your chain needs replacing it is easy to order the part, though you may have to wait at least two weeks for it to come in depending on the type of motorbike you own.

Of course, there are other tests and maintenance that you can perform that will also help you keep your motorcycle insurance policy. All of these, from battery testing to emissions testing are part of keeping your bike in good condition. Even more, they can be important factors in keeping your insurance rates reasonable. Since motorcycle insurance is dependent on the quality of your bicycle, as well as its safety, it is important to keep current every motorcycle safety test. Doing all of this can help you save money in the future.
